23.07.2017 My latest book YOU RUN AROUND TOWN AND YOU THINK THAT IT'S GROOVY has arrived today at PhotoQ Bookshopcheers!

"This book might become the most hilarious book published in 2016. Dutch artist Chantal Rens (1981) made collages showing all kinds of animals carrying on their back glasses of different alcoholic beverages. Simple, yet very well executed."

— Edie Peters, PhotoQ Bookshop

14.05-012.06.2016 Tegendraads met Textiel, Witteveen Visual Art Center, Amsterdam
samengesteld door Oeke Witteveen en mede-curator Alex de Vries.

Deelnemende kunstenaars : ANNESAS APPEL | KARIN ARINK | MARIAN BIJLENGA | HARMEN BRETHOUWER | BARBARA BROEKMAN | VINCENT DAMS | CARINA ELLEMERS | MAURICE VAN ES | MARTIN FENNE | ISABEL FERRAND | ANNA FRYDMAN | DESIREE HAMMEN | JENNY YMKER | ANTHONY KLEINEPIER | MARGRIET LUYTEN | LINDA NIEUWSTAD | ALET PILON | BARBARA POLDERMAN | CHANTAL RENS | CAROLIEN SCHOLTES | NICOLE SCHULZE | BEREND STRIK | LIESBETH TOUW | RIËTTE WANDERS | LAM DE WOLF | HALINA ZALEWSKA

CHANTAL RENS | Het rolgordijn | 2013 | 15 x 10 cm

25.05.2014 ZINE ONE: INSERT TEXT HERE
workshop at PrintRoom by Basje Boer & Chantal Rens, part of Zine Camp, a DIY festival.

Artist Chantal Rens and writer Basje Boer, who both flirt with the absurd
on a regular basis, have extensive experience with do-it-yourself publishing.
During the workshop they will combine practical tips on how to put together
a zine with stimulating ideas on imaginative content, the main question being:
How do you combine text with images?
What playfull or innovative ways can we think up to do this?

The Riso workspace is open for workshops by Chantal Rens & Basje Boer
and the PrintRoom team.

===========================================================

24-25.05.2014 ZINE CAMP,  Rotterdam - free entrance
a collaboration between WORM, PrintRoom & Rekult, held at two locations.

WORM is the main venue of Zine Camp. WORM, Institute for Avantgardistic
Recreation, is a venue and workspace for DIY experimental music, club events, talks,
film and media hacking. WORM will offer its space to provide a stage, working spaces,
materials, workshops etc. Also the WORM shop will arrange a special collection to match
with Zine Camp. PrintRoom is a presentation space and shop dedicated to artists' publications.
The space hosts talks, presentations, book launches, and workshops that explore artistic
strategies of independent publishing. PrintRoom also houses a risography stencil
workspace. PrintRoom presents a variety of zine-collections with diverse material
from different zine-scenes, contemporary as well as historical. A program of talks by
collectors reveal some special zine-interests as diverse and quirky as: Mexican Punk,
Neoist, Queer-Zines and Anarcho-Esoterica.

Presents are given without the expectation of payment. Although gift-giving might involve an expectation of reciprocity, a gift is meant to be free. In many human societies, the act of mutually exchanging free services and presents contribute to social cohesion.

The modern industrialization has made great promises, and most of the promises are developed to fulfill the emotions that possessions bring. Within the newest developments and needs of younger generations people ponder more on the "being nature" and less on the "having nature".

The aim of this international exhibition of small works is to question these positions of having and being in connection to giving.

At the WildBookMarket (WBM), national and international artists and publishers will be presenting their remarkable art books published between 2007-2011. WBM is the ideal opportunity to explore, buy or exchange art(ists) books. This year WBM will be focussing on the phenomenon of the monograph.

WBM 2011 includes 20 exhibitors and over a 100 individual entries. The entries come from many countries in Europe, and one from the USA. Most publications were released in 2010, but some are even fresh off the press!

09.2010 cover + portfolio GUP Magazine  #26 the vernacular issue

The word itself contains so much that its meaning remains empty. Luckily, we had the opportunity to browse through Erik Kessels’ shed of stumbled-upon footage. And so climbing that attic is our attempt to point out the range of the ‘vernacular’; from the archival documentation of Andrea Stultiens to the artistic interventions of Chantal Rens and Paul Bogaers. From the conscious search to the coincidental find, it is all here. Still, it is only the tip of the iceberg. For what ‘vernacular’ essentially represents is not so much the few pictures that have been found, but the many elements of photography that have always been neglected and forgotten. You are hereby invited to discover the beauty of the damned.

12.05.2010 - 16.05.2010  Use Me, Abuse Me, curated by Erik Kessels, New York Photo Festival at Smack Mellon Gallery

Use Me, Abuse Me begins with Kessels’ a posteriori observation that easy access to photography tools and software results in quicker, more facile modes of image production, consumption and disposal. Perhaps a condition of this state, a plethora of photographers and image-makers are experimenting with pre-existing images and using them within their own work on an unprecedented scale. Photographs are variously collected, reinterpreted, cut, copied, pasted and generally abused.
Erik Kessels’ show is about how images and image-making technology influence artists and photographers. Use Me, Abuse Me explores several questions, including: Where will image-making take us? Will all existing photography be endlessly recycled? Will we soon see more photographers taking fewer photographs? How far can we stretch the medium of photography?

Salon für Kunstbuch. An Artwork as Enterprise 20.03.2010 - 00.00.0000 Curated by Nini Palavandishwili, Brigitte Schöppner, Barbara Steiner Bernhard Cella has an interest in current forms of visual art, which shift modes of production and distribution. Temporary settings mirror real serviced. In 2007 he founded the >Salon für Buchkunst< in Vienna, >An Artwork as Enterprise< According to Cella it functions as >a kind of model-space on a scale of 1:1, in which changing relationships among objects, people and artworks can unfold but being not economical.< In 2009 Cella started an open call in the internet, asking >Have you recently published an art book without ISBN< For his Leipzig project Cella is going to show this idiosyncratic collection of NO-ISBN, books without an ISBN number. Such books are difficult to come by, because the publishers do not have recourse to the dominant distribution channels. During the Leipzig book fair the start of the multi-partied project will be marked by reading-performances of Leipzig based artists. Over the course of the year, Cella will publish a new book in Leipzig, which examines the phenomenon NO-ISBN between the production of art, the aspiration towards autonomy and professionalisation.
